چکیده

This study experimentally investigates the effect of a bumpy base on the Brazil-nut phenomenon in a vertically vibrated granular bed. The rise dynamics of an intruder is determined by the particle tracking method. The results indicate that the rise time increases with an increase in the base roughness, and the variation of the rise time with different base factors is more pronounced with smaller vibration acceleration and higher vibration frequency. A theoretical model is employed to measure the penetration length of the intruder and the drag force between the intruder and the immersed beads. The penetration length is reduced and the drag force is enhanced with surface roughness of the base. Additionally, the transport properties of the vibrated glass beads are also measured and discussed. With greater base roughness, the strength of the diffusive and convective motion is reduced leading to a weaker Brazil-nut effect. C © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4890363]

Physics of Granular Matter: Pattern Formation and Applications

A summary of results is presented from experiments in granular systems, which are excited by vertical and/or horizontal vibrations. The transitions between different dynamic states depend on internal properties of the granular system like the density of particles and on external parameters of the driving shakers. Characteristic for granular systems are such counterintuitive phenomena as the cry...

Simulation of Vibration-Induced Segregation of Equal-Sized Bronze and Glass Spheres

The influence of the surrounding air on the dynamics of fine granular material is becoming an increasingly topical area of research interest. While for large granular particles (diameter > 1 mm) the effect of the gas phase can usually be ignored, for smaller particles the ambient air can have a pronounced influence. One of the most striking examples of the effect of air was demonstrated in the ...

Investigation of the Effect of Pre-Stressed on Vibration Frequency of Rectangular Nanoplate Based on a Visco-Pasternak Foundation

In the present work, the free vibration behavior of rectangular graphene sheet under shear in-plane load is studied. Nonlocal elasticity theory has been implemented to study the vibration analysis of orthotropic single-layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) subjected to shear in-plane load. The SLGSs is embedded on a viscoelastic medium which is simulated as a Visco-Pasternak foundation. Using the pri...

Vibration-induced granular segregation: a phenomenon driven by three mechanisms.

The segregation of large spheres in a granular bed under vertical vibrations is studied. In our experiments, we systematically measure rise times as a function of density, diameter, and depth, for two different sinusoidal excitations. The measurements reveal that, at low frequencies, inertia and convection are the only mechanisms behind segregation. Inertia (convection) dominates when the relat...

Liquid Effluent Discharge and Control Management of Surrounding Soil

The effluent generated from a thermal power plant waste is a mixture of several chemicals and to identify the effect of these chemicals on soil, a case study on naturally contaminated sites at Al-Musayyib region, Hilla city in Iraq has been carried out. Soil and water samples were collected from the sites and analyzed to identify the pollutants and their effect on soil characteristics. Laborato...
